Hey Parents!

We wanted to offer a few directions as you navigate leading your grade-schooler through today’s lesson and activities. Below you will find our Bible passage for the day, a lesson plan for the day, and several other tips that can help you and your child as you study and worship this morning.

Here are the materials you will need for our lesson today:

  • Coloring Supplies

  • Ball

1. Read the Bible Passage | genesis 1

2. Ask the Big Picture Question:

Who is God?

3. Watch the Bible Story

4. Review the Key Verse

Colossians 1:16b-17, “All things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

5. Answer the Big Picture Question

God is our Creator and King.

6. Interact with the “questions from kids” video

7. Pray together

8. Do one or both of the Activities

Activity #1: Duck, Duck, Zoo

Directions

Instruct your kids to sit in a circle. Choose someone to be It. He/She will walk around the circle, gently tapping each family member’s head saying “duck.” It will select someone to chase her by saying another animal, such as “monkey,” when she taps that person’s head. He must stand up and chase It around the circle. Both people must move and make sounds like the animal It called out when choosing her chaser. If the chaser tags It before she sits in his spot, It must sit in the center of the circle until another kid takes her place. Otherwise, she sits in his spot. The chaser becomes It in the next round.

Say

It is fun to pretend to be different animals. Today we will learn about the creation of the world. God created the land and the sea and all the animals on the earth. Everything God created was good.

Activity #2: Key Passage Activity

Directions

Instruct your kids to sit in a circle. Show the key passage and invite your kids to read it together. Then toss a tennis ball to a family member. Invite him to say the first word of the key passage and then pass the ball to another person. She will say the next word and pass the ball, and so forth. After your family completes the verse, hide the key passage and play again. If someone gets stuck, show the key passage and invite your family to read the forgotten word together before continuing.

Say

Our key passage from the Book of Colossians reminds us that God the Son created the world with God the Father. Jesus is God’s Son, and He has always existed. The whole universe is held together by Jesus’ power, and we exist to love God and give Him glory by enjoying His goodness.

EXTRA TIPS

  • If your grade-schooler is in First or Second Grade, start the morning working on the coloring sheet and activity page.

  • As time permits, do one activity before the Bible Story Video and one activity afterward, to help reinforce the message.

  • If your grade-schooler is in Third, Fourth, or Fifth Grade, download and print the Older Kid Journal Page for them to work on at the end of the lesson
